Shanty Towns

  • Some people live in "shanty towns" that are usually made of iron or wood or cardboard and some are only one room.
  • The groom has to pay "labola" which is bride price that they can pay in cattle or money to the brides parents in order to marry her and sometimes takes years to pay up. They do that in ethnic groups.
  • When someone has a wedding it usually has a lot of dancing and eating!
  • Between ages 10 and 18 children have to take an initiation where older people teach them about how to be an adult.
  • People there eat mealie meals which consists of cornmeal, porridge, veggies, and meat.\
  • Some common sports are soccer, rugby and cricket.
  • The language is made up of four groups which are called Nguini, Sotho, Tsonga or Shangana, and Venda.
  • The africans that live in the rurally wear headdresses and colorful outfits and daily wear western themed clothes. Also rural girls wear a scarf, headdresses with a dress or a blouse with a skirt.
  • Urban africans wear wear pants shirts, and occasionally business suits but not often do they wear shorts. African women that are urban wear African and European styles!

Human Environment Interaction

Humans adapting to the environment

  • Herders move livestock seasonally because of climate changes.
  • Zulu villages are made from mud houses and thatch ceilings.

Humans Changing the environment

  • They grow crops like apples,corn,grapes,oranges,pineapples,pototo,sugar cane,wheat and raise livestock on farms.
  • They mine for minerals such as gold, copper, coal etc.

Environmental problems due to people changing the environment

  • When mining and drilling holes in the ground the land is being wasted.
  • From raising livestock South Africans are facing deforestation and diseses to people due to water shortage, air pollution, and land degration.
